Romanticism was a literary and artistic movement that took place in Western Europe from the late 18th century to the middle of the 19th century. It was a reaction to the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, and was characterized by:

  • A focus on the individual and their unique perspective
  • A celebration of nature and the common man
  • An emphasis on the imagination and emotions
  • A rejection of tradition, reason, rationality, and authority
  • An idealization of women
  • An embrace of isolation and melancholy

Some characteristics of Romantic literature include:

  • Emotive language
  • Use of the imagination
  • Appeal to the senses
  • Focus on art for the sake of art
  • Giving readers access to the characters' innermost thoughts and desires
  • An increased perception of the spiritual and sometimes the supernatural
